When Whining Is A Good Thing
When you’re first learning to sing, too much breath sound, or too much squeeze sound in your voice can make it difficult to sing.
If you have too much breath, it can just sound like you’re singing with too much falsetto all the time.
If your voice is too squeezy, it can be difficult for your voice to make sound at all.
If either one of these scenarios plagues you, there is a great way to get around it, that is accessible to just about anyone who talks
Imagine being a child again, and you have been given an instruction you just don’t see he point to.
You let out a “Maaahm, do I have to?...”
Needless to say, it was unlikely to be well received at that time :)
I give you full permission to bring that whiny voice back now and get to know it well.

When a child whines, the sound is piercing because it’s strong and the vocal cords are working together in a crisp way. We can’t help but hear it.
When you perform, this is the exact same mechanism you will be using to cut through the room and pierce the hearts of your listeners.
We can build on it and make it more powerful, of course, with more training :)
To start with, imagine you had a long to do list, and you think: “ah man do I have to do that?” You might even say it out loud.
If you didn’t already say it out loud, try it.
Now take that same voice, and try one of your favorite song melodies as long as it’s in a similar range.
What happens is: squeezy cords loosens just enough to make a strong sound without over pushing. Or, if the sound was previously too breathy, some of the breathiness is taken out without squeezing your throat too much.

You’ll want to avoid pushing too hard as you go, let the whiny sound plus your tummy muscle do the work.
It’s perfectly acceptable if it feels like you’re trying out something completely off the wall crazy.
Most of my students feel that way at first :)
Jus the other day one of my students accessed more power than she ever had before after trying this out.
In fact, after trying this approach, her voice sounded more like her favorite artist than she thought possible, while pushing less than she was previously.
You’ll want to try it a few different ways, with a few different melodies.
Try at mid-high range, middle range, and lower range. Also try different levels of volume.
It may take time to find the range and song it is easiest to do this on at first. Getting to know your voice early on is going to help you gain more control over it when you master more technique.
