Many people make that decision every day. Unfortunately, most will run into challenges they could not foresee and quit.
You definitely do not want to be one of those people. You want to get it right and you want to succeed.
Here are 3 things that you can do that will help you succeed when you are learning to play guitar.
Commit Fully To Learning How To Play Guitar
The biggest problem I see today with people who want to learn to play guitar is commitment level.
They come in and want to "try" a month. They "hope" to be able to find the time to practice and make it to classes. And so on.
When you approach learning to play guitar (or anything really) in this way it means you have not placed a very high value on it. That also means it will be easy for you to stop it if it does not work out or gets a difficult.
The issue here is that you are sabotaging your success from the start. A non-committal attitude to learning to play guitar is pretty much sealing your fate.
Learning to play guitar is not the easiest thing to do. There are many challenges to overcome. If you do not make a full commitment chances are you will quit when the going gets tough.
Instead, tell yourself you will do this no matter what. Talk to your family and tell them you are taking this seriously and carve out some time to take practice and get them on board. Then go for it!

2. Make A Plan To Help You Reach Your Guitar Playing Goals
Having a plan is the best way to accomplish any goal or task.
Learning to play guitar is no different. You need to know what steps to take, in what order and when.
There are some basic steps you can take like finding and buying the best guitar, knowing the style you want to play and the songs you want to learn.
You can then figure out which things you need to learn and how. Will you go online and find some free resources, buy books or DVDs, or find a teacher to help you?
Those are all potential resources that can help you, and the decisions you make at every point will affect how successful you are at learning to play guitar. So, it is very important to do it the right way.
However, you have never learned how to play guitar successfully, so how do you know what to do at each point in that plan? You don’t.
What you need to do is to find someone who does. Someone who has training on how to teach people to play guitar and they will be able to help you lay out the best plan for you and help you accomplish it.
Can any teacher do this? Nope. That's the topic of the next section.
3. Find The Right Teacher For You
Finding a teacher to help you to learn how to play guitar is the single most important thing you can do to help you succeed at learning to play guitar.
As I mentioned in the previous section though, not every guitar teacher is the same, and you need to find someone that can create the best plan for you.
The best teacher for you is one that is professionally trained to teach guitar. These people are rare but they can be found in most areas.
A professional guitar teacher will be able to assess where you are in your playing journey and build a plan based on your goals. They will teach you the things you need to learn to reach them.
Most importantly they will teach you the things you need to know at the right time and in the right order so you progress without getting overwhelmed.
They are experts in their field.
